Each Roman Republic Anonymous AR Quadrigatus offered here is in Very Fine condition, earning an impressive 5/5 strike grade. Coins with this strike grade often feature strongly struck, well-centered designs that retain most of the original crispness in the detail. The 4/5 surface grade is for coins that show only minimal loss of the original surface quality, including light wear and tear, as well as minimal toning.
The Quadrigati produced between approximately 225 and 212 BC were struck during the most existentially dangerous period in the entire history of the Roman Republic, a span of years that encompassed the catastrophic defeats of the Trebia, Lake Trasimene, and Cannae at the hands of Hannibal and the desperate Roman struggle for survival against the greatest military genius the ancient world produced. Coins struck across these years of supreme crisis carry a historical charge of almost unparalleled intensity, their production continuing even as Roman armies were being destroyed and the very survival of the Republic hung in genuine doubt.
In the obverse design of the Roman Republic Quadrigatus Silver Coin, the design presents the ancient Dioscuri janiform. This image is often said to feature the youthful faces of the twin brothers Castor and Pollux conjoined in a back-to-back profile. The twins face opposite directions with laureate crowns on their heads. For the reverse of the Roman Republic AR Quadrigatus, the design features the magnificent quadriga that gave the coin its name, Jupiter or Victory shown driving a four-horse chariot at full gallop with a thunderbolt raised in one hand.
