Product Details

The silver stater of Mazaeus is one of the most historically significant and numismatically celebrated coins of the ancient Near East, issued by the powerful Persian satrap who governed the provinces of Cilicia and later Babylon under the Achaemenid kings and whose career spanned one of the most dramatic periods of transition in the ancient world, from the height of Persian imperial power to the conquest of Alexander the Great. This Cilicia Tarsus AR Stater from the reign of Mazaeus features a strong Mint State certification from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), with a 5/5 strike grade and a 3/5 surface grade. Now, Cilicia Tarsus AR Stater Coins are available online from Bullion Metals.

This Cilicia Tarsus Mazaeus AR Stater Coin comes with a stunning Mint State certification and an impressive 5/5 strike grade. The 5/5 strike grade is an indication of the coin’s strongly struck, well-centered design elements that remain crisp and detailed on each side. The 3/5 surface grade points to a coin with modest signs of wear and tear of the centuries.

In the obverse design of the Cilicia Tarsus AR Stater Coin, you will find a depiction of Ba’al, the supreme deity of Tarsus, enthroned in majestic authority. Meanwhile, the reverse of the Cilicia Tarsus Mazaeus AR Stater Silver Coin features a lion attacking a bull or a lion alone in a composition of fierce, dynamic energy, whose superb die cutting and deep relief make the finest examples among the most visually impressive coins.

The staters struck by Mazaeus at Tarsus in Cilicia between approximately 361 and 328 BC were produced during the final decades of Achaemenid Persian rule in the region, a period that encompassed the great Persian king Artaxerxes III’s reconquest of Egypt, the gathering storm of Alexander’s Macedonian invasion, and ultimately the complete collapse of the empire that had dominated the Near East for two centuries. Mazaeus himself surrendered Babylon to Alexander in 331 BC and was reappointed as its governor by the Macedonian conqueror.
