The Canadian government of then-Prime Minister Brian Mulroney announced a series of 10 proof silver coins from the Royal Canadian Mint to celebrate the 1988 Calgary Winter Games. This was the second time Canada hosted the Olympic Games and the first time it hosted the Winter Games following its hosting of the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.

In partnership with the Royal Bank of Canada, the Royal Canadian Mint issued only proof quality coins between 1985 and 1987. Each release featured a different sport from the major events of the Winter Olympics. The release schedule included two coins struck in 1985, six in 1986, and two in 1987. Regardless of issue year, the coins featured a 1988 date in honor of the Calgary Games. The new denomination chosen for the 1988 games was $20 (CAD). Another change compared to the coins from the 1976 Olympic Games commemorative release was the use of edge lettering, a first on Canadian silver coins.

The edge lettering on these Canadian $20 Olympic Silver Coins reads “XV Olympic Winter Games – Jeux D’Olympiques D’Hiver,” with the latter being the French version of the former. However, it is important to note that some varieties exist today that never got the edge lettering inscribed.

Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse of all Canadian $20 Olympic Silver Coins. The right-profile effigy of the Queen is the second-generation portrait used on Canadian coins and graced Canadian currency from 1965 to 1989.

Olympic athletes are depicted competing in their respective sports on the reverse of these Canadian $20 Olympic Silver Coins. Major sports represented in the designs include downhill skiing, speed skating, hockey, figure skating, and bobsledding.
