The 2008 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin had the highest mintage figure in the series since a record-breaking 1.5 million coins were struck in 1999. The onset of the Great Recession in 2008 helped boost demand for safe-haven metals, propelling the 2008 1 oz American Gold Eagle to its production of 710,000 coins.

The reverse of the American Gold Eagle includes a design used exclusively on the coins in this collection. Designed by Miley Busiek in 1986, it features a family of nesting bald eagles with a female watching a group of hatchlings and a male flying overhead with an olive branch in his talons.
