The primary design of the 5 Florida Goldback Gold Note captures the history of piracy along the coast of Florida. The design shows a female pirate looking over charts on the deck of a ship in the foreground. The phrase BRAVERY CONQUERS THE UKNOWN is printed at the bottom, while a pirate vessel sails in the background with the word AUDAX on it. The original Latin term audax referred to a bold, daring undertaking and was also translated as courageous, spirited, and foolhardy.

The Florida coast was a hotbed of piracy during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, particularly during the “Golden Age of Piracy” from roughly 1690 to 1730. Pirates like Black Caesar and José Gaspar prowled the waters between Florida and the Caribbean, taking advantage of the strategic location to intercept Spanish treasure ships returning to Europe. The complex coastline, with its numerous islands, inlets, and hidden coves, provided perfect hiding spots for pirates to launch attacks and conceal their stolen goods, while the treacherous reefs and shallow waters gave local pirates an advantage over pursuing naval vessels.
