Route 66 traverses more miles through Oklahoma than any other state—approximately 400 miles—making the state central to the highway’s identity as America’s “Mother Road” when it was established in 1926. Oklahoma’s section became particularly symbolic during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl era, as immortalized in John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath.”

The highway brought economic prosperity to small Oklahoma towns like Elk City, Clinton, and Catoosa, spawning iconic roadside attractions, motor courts, and diners that embodied the optimistic spirit of American automobile culture before Interstate 40 largely replaced the route in the 1970s, though preservation efforts have maintained many historic segments as nostalgic tourist destinations.
