Introduced in 1986, the Gold Kangaroo was struck from 1986 to 1989 under the monicker of Australian Gold Nugget. The coins featured a different depiction on each weight of a historic gold nugget discovered in Australia. In 1990, Perth Mint switched to the image of the native marsupial on the reverse of the coins, offering a new depiction of the kangaroo each year, but sharing that design on all weights.
