On the obverse of 2009 AmericanGold EagleCoins is a bust of Lady Liberty. This front-facing portrait from 1907 was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was originally used on the obverse of the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933. The design field includes a full-length bust of Liberty walking toward the viewer as she holds up a torch in her right hand with an olive branch in her left. The U.S. Capitol Building is featured in the background at Liberty’s feet as sun rays are found on the horizon behind her figure.
The reverse side of 2009 1/4 oz Gold Eagle Coins comes with a depiction of a family of American bald eagles. The design shows a male eagle soaring over a large nest that holds a female eagle and hatchlings within.
