In the 1970s, the Gold Krugerrand was the only gold bullion coin widely available to investors. It wasn’t until the final year of the decade, 1979, that the Gold Krugerrand had competition, and that came in the form of the Gold Maple Leaf from the Royal Canadian Mint. The 1970s was a high-water mark for the Krugerrand and 1978 saw the highest mintage of the decade.

The obverse of the 1978 South African Gold Krugerrand Coin features a portrait of Paul Kruger. This left-profile relief was created in the 1890s to feature on coins of the South African Pound denomination and was revived in 1967 for this series.
