The Jefferson Nickel is one of the most established US coin designs of the modern era. First issued in 1938, it has long featured President Thomas Jefferson on the obverse. A unique subset of these coins was issued between late 1943 and 1945. Known as War Nickels, the US Mint drastically altered the composition of the coins to conserve nickel for the war effort. This particular 1945-S Nickel boasts a frosted relief of President Jefferson, a crisp strike of Monticello, and satin-smooth fields on both sides. This 1945-S Jefferson Nickel comes with a Mint State 68 certification. The typical MS68 coin shows a sharp strike with full, original mint luster and no more than four light, scattered contact marks. This particular coin showcases a white surface, reflecting its unique alloy with 35% silver content. There are only 17 examples from the 1945-S Jefferson Nickel release that earned higher grades than this piece.

Obverse design elements on the 1945 Jefferson Nickel include a left-profile bust of President Thomas Jefferson. Designed in 1938 by Felix Schlag, this design was used for an impressive 67 years before it was modernized.

Reverse visuals on 1945-S Jefferson Nickel Coins depict Jefferson’s home at Monticello. The design field includes the S mint mark near the top beneath E PLURIBUS UNUM. Other engravings on this side include MONTICELLO, FIVE CENTS, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

During World War II, the US government mandated the rationing of various industrial goods and metals to support the war effort. This impacted the Jefferson Nickel starting in late 1943. Originally produced with 75% copper and 25% nickel, the US Mint was directed to remove all nickel content from the coins, resulting in the War Time Nickel with its 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese.
