This 1940 Washington Quarter represents the aesthetic best of the series, with a bright silver center on the obverse that is framed by gold-and-teal toning around the rim and a satin luster on the design. The reverse field features a bright, silver center as well, surrounded by a rich, golden-yellow tone around the rim. This MS67+ specimen is one of the finest examples of an MS67 coin.

The 1940-P (though no mintmark appears on the coin) represents the standard issue for that year and is valued primarily by collectors seeking high-grade examples with strong strikes and original luster.

Designed by John Flanagan, the obverse of the 1940 Washington Quarter features a left-facing portrait of George Washington. The design is based on a 1786 sculpture by French artist Jean-Antoine Houdon, which served as a reliable reference for Washington’s likeness. Flanagan’s portrait presents a reserved and dignified appearance, highlighting Washington’s recognizable features and calm authority. “LIBERTY” appears along the top edge of the coin, with “IN GOD WE TRUST” placed to the left of the portrait and the date shown below, forming a balanced and enduring design.

The reverse of the 1940 Washington Quarter, also created by Flanagan, depicts a heraldic eagle with spread wings standing on a bundle of arrows. Olive branches appear on either side, providing contrast to the arrows beneath the eagle. The eagle faces left, with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” inscribed above and “QUARTER DOLLAR” below. The combination of arrows and olive branches represents the nation’s strength and its desire for peace, themes that align closely with Washington’s role as the country’s first president.
