Originally introduced in 1878 as large-sized notes, the Silver Certificates were shrunk down to proportions that modern Americans would easily recognize today. These were the first notes to resemble the designs of the modern $1 Federal Reserve Note. The design on the obverse side of the 1928 $1 Silver Certificate changed very little from the 1923 Series, the last of the large-sized note. The small-sized notes retained the same three-quarter profile of President George Washington. Unlike the 1923 Series, the 1928 Series has serial numbers and seals printed only in blue ink. However, the 1928 Series does feature six different versions: 1928, 1928A, 1928B, 1928C, 1928D, and 1928E. Each letter denotes a change in the signature combinations of the Treasurer of the United States and the Secretary of the Treasury.

All of these 1928 $1 Silver Certificate Notes are available to purchase in Very Fine+ condition. Notes in this condition have numerous fold lines, light-to-moderate wear and tear, and light-to-mild soiling. Though common signs of wear and tear are present, the note paper is still crisp and relatively clean. Please bear in mind that we cannot guarantee the specific series, for example 1928A, of the note you receive. As such, you could receive matching or varied notes from the 1928 Series when you buy several of these notes.

President George Washington is depicted on the obverse side of the 1928 $1 Silver Certificate Note. This portrait of Washington is accompanied by the serial number, printed twice, in blue ink with the Treasurer’s seal in blue ink as well. This side of the notes has a printed “Series of 1928” above the blue seal. The different series of 1928 notes are identifiable by this notation, with A, B, C, D, or E added for the various different signature combinations.

For the reverse field of 1928 $1 Silver Certificate Notes, you will find the nation of issue and denomination. The design on this side retained some of the elements from the 1923 Series large-sized notes, but did move the nation of issue from the central field and enlarged the notations of “One Dollar” and “ONE.”
