In the obverse design of SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds, you will see the details of the famous Sun Stone. The Aztec Sun Stone is a masterwork of sacred art and cosmological symbolism, carved from a single massive basalt disk. At its center is the face of Tonatiuh, the Aztec sun god, his tongue extended in the form of a sacrificial obsidian blade. Surrounding Tonatiuh are four rectangular panels representing the four previous suns or world ages of Aztec cosmology, encircled in turn by the twenty named days of the Aztec ritual calendar, then rings of jade and turquoise glyphs, star symbols, solar rays, and finally two great fire serpents whose bodies frame the entire composition.
For the reverse of 1/4 oz Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds, the design features a right-profile effigy of Emperor Cuauhtemoc. Chosen to lead the Aztec Empire in 1520, he was the last tlatoani (ruler) of the empire and the nephew of Moctezuma II. As the Spanish under Hernan Cortes pressed to topple the empire, Cuauhtemoc mounted a fevered defense of the capital, Tenochtitlan, that was eventually unsuccessful. He was captured by the Spanish in August 1521 and later executed by Cortes in 1525.
The Aztec Calendar Stone is made all the more impressive by the fact that it is carved into a single piece of basalt. The rock is approximately 12 feet in diameter and weighs nearly 25 tons. The result of the Aztecs’ incredible skill is a single carved object that functions simultaneously as a religious monument, a cosmological diagram, and a calendrical system. It is a breathtaking synthesis of art, science, and spiritual belief that ranks among the supreme achievements of pre-Columbian civilization.
