The artwork on the 1/2 Arizona Goldback Gold Note portrays a Spanish woman kneeling with a candle in hand, set against the backdrop of San Xavier del Bac and white doves in flight. The design pays tribute to the Jesuit missionaries who led Spanish expeditions of Arizona in the 17th and 18th centuries. Their expeditions mapped previously unknown territories, documented indigenous cultures, and created the foundation for permanent Spanish settlements, though their methods of forced cultural conversion remain controversial today.

Known as the “White Dove of the Desert,” San Xavier del Bac is an iconic example of Spanish Colonial architecture located south of Tucson, within the Tohono O’odham San Xavier Indian Reservation. Still serving as an active parish church today, this National Historic Landmark draws visitors worldwide who marvel at its gleaming white stucco walls rising against the Sonoran Desert landscape and its remarkably preserved religious art.
