On the obverse of the 100 Pesos Mexican Silver Coin is a depiction of General Jose Maria Morelos. The front-facing bust of Morelos captures a portrait of the man who has become a national hero in Mexico. His portrait is shown along with inscriptions of the Mexican Mint mark, date mark, and a text inscription of the face value as “Cien Pesos.”
General Jose Maria Morelos was a Roman Catholic priest in Mexico and a revolutionary rebel leader. He took up a position of leadership in the Mexican revolution after Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was captured and executed in 1811. Morelos was instrumental in organizing the war effort and leading the installation of the Congress of Anahuac. Morelos was eventually captured by Spanish royalist forces, tried by an Inquisition, defrocked from the priesthood, and executed for treason in 1815.
The reverse face of 100 Pesos Mexican Silver Coins comes with a depiction of the Mexican coat of arms. The modern symbol of the federal government depicts a golden eagle as it battles with a serpent on a cactus branch.
