Standing 151 feet and 1 inch from her toes to the tip of the torch in her right hand, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated in New York Harbor on October 28, 1886. The statue is based on the figure Libertas, the Roman liberty goddess. The torch in her right hand is well-known as a symbol of light to the world, but the tablet in her left hand often goes overlooked. That tablet has the Roman numerals “IV MDCCLXXVI” next to the word “July.” Those Roman numerals translate to July 4, 1776, the date of the US Declaration of Independence.
