The Nets franchise was founded in 1967 as the New Jersey Americans in the American Basketball Association (ABA), changing their name to the New York Nets in 1968 when they moved to Long Island. The team won two ABA championships before the ABA-NBA merger in 1976, when they joined the NBA and moved to New Jersey, becoming the New Jersey Nets. After spending decades in New Jersey playing in various arenas, the franchise made a historic move to Brooklyn in 2012, becoming the Brooklyn Nets.
