The Nets franchise was established in 1967 as the New Jersey Americans in the American Basketball Association (ABA). One year later, the team relocated to Long Island and became the New York Nets. During their ABA tenure, the Nets captured two championships before joining the NBA in 1976 following the ABA-NBA merger, at which point they moved back to New Jersey and became the New Jersey Nets. After several decades in New Jersey, playing in multiple arenas, the franchise made a landmark move to Brooklyn in 2012 and adopted the name Brooklyn Nets.
