The Atlanta Hawks organization traces its origins back to 1946, when it was established as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks in Illinois. The team was among the founding members of the National Basketball League before joining the NBA in 1949. Over the years, the franchise experienced several relocations—first moving to Milwaukee in 1951 and becoming the Milwaukee Hawks, then to St. Louis in 1955 as the St. Louis Hawks, and finally settling in Atlanta in 1968.
