The reverse of all American Gold Buffalo coins features the depiction of an American bison. In this case, the design is based on Black Diamond. The latter buffalo was a resident of the Central Park Zoo in New York City during the early decades of the 20thcentury. This also appeared on Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel, which was in circulation from 1913 to 1938.
